We are very disappointed to announce that the newly crowned 2024 U20 3000mSC Gold Medalist, Sembo Alemayew of Ethiopia will not be able to participate in next week's Diamond League Final at the Memorial Van Damme Meeting in Brussels due to a lack of visa.
.
Sembo is a Diamond League Meet winner; finished 5th at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games; and is the U20 National Record Holder for Ethiopia (3000mSC); but even with all of her athletic accolades she still cannot obtain a visa for the Schengen Zone prior to the meet. In April 2024, the European Union announced it will make it more difficult for Ethiopian citizens to receive European Visas; in an attempt to leverage on the Ethiopian government which is accused of failure to cooperate in taking back citizens found to be living illegally in the Schengen Zone.
.
This situation is hurting the opportunities and lives of many athletes, and we strongly hope it can be solved as quickly as possible; so that situations like this do not happen to any more athletes going forward.

As the ESMM and ERT family, we are deeply saddened by the devastating news received this morning that our dear sister Rebecca Cheptegei of Uganda has passed away.
.
Rebecca was a shining light in our team that represented the best of a new generation of Ugandan athletes; not only athletically talented but beautifully kind as well. We send our thoughts and prayers to her family and friends and everyone she touched in the athletics world. Rest in Peace our dear Rebecca.
.
We pray that justice will be served to the fullest extent of the law and we strongly condemn any and all domestic violence happening anywhere around the world.
.
We also want to thank everyone who tried to rescue Rebecca from this tragic event and doctors who treated her in Kenya; you are truly heroes.
